Mangal Dosha (Manglik) Explained: Myths, Effects and Remedies

Few terms cause as much pre-marriage worry as Manglik. Yet Mangal Dosha — also called Kuja Dosha — is far less frightening than popular belief suggests. Understanding what it actually is replaces fear with clarity.

What Mangal Dosha Really Is

Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars sits in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the lagna, the Moon or Venus. Mars is a fiery, assertive planet, and these houses relate to self, home, partnership, longevity and intimacy. The concern is that raw Martian energy — impatience, temper, dominance — can create friction in married life if it is not balanced.

Common Myths

The biggest myth is that a Manglik is destined for a broken or tragic marriage. In reality, the dosha is extremely common, its intensity varies enormously, and many respected charts carry it. Mars in these houses can equally grant courage, drive, physical vitality and leadership. The placement is a factor to weigh, not a verdict.

When the Dosha Cancels

Classical texts list many cancellations (bhanga). If both partners are Manglik, the dosha is widely considered neutralised. It also softens when Mars is in its own sign or exalted, when a strong Jupiter aspects it, or when Mars falls in certain signs like Aries, Scorpio, Leo or Aquarius. A good astrologer checks the whole chart, not just one house.

Practical Remedies

  • Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and honouring Lord Hanuman, the deity linked to Mars.
  • Chanting Mars mantras or the Mangal Beej mantra on Tuesdays.
  • Charity of red items such as masoor dal, and fasting on Tuesdays where suitable.
  • Wearing red coral only after proper chart analysis, never blindly.

Most importantly, self-awareness is itself a remedy: a Manglik who consciously manages temper and practises patience defuses much of the predicted friction. Rather than rejecting a match over a single label, couples are far better served by a careful comparison of both charts and honest communication.
